Silent Coda is the
first chapter in a never-to-be-finished graphic novel based on
the Dungeons and Dragons TV cartoon. I began it about five years ago,
but never got further than
the first few pages of what was the story's ending- the Coda. It was only
recently, when I got connected to the web and discovered that there were
still people out there who shared my fond memories of the cartoon and
its characters that I thought about resuming the work.
The Coda is a final
section in any piece of music which provides a kind of summing-up of the
rest of the piece. In this case my Coda was supposed to provide a glimpse
of the Dungeons and Dragons gang years after the period in which the TV
show is set. The group are surviving now in a world where their most urgent
crises are the need to find food and shelter (I was always curious as
to how the gang handled the simple problems of living as they did- itinerantly-
like how they got breakfast and where they went to the toilet...). It
is a bleak end to what I envisaged being a dark and ultimately sinister
story. I'm interested in the reality of the situation as much as
the fantasy- what might these people really become after several
years lost on an alien, unreal world. I wanted to reflect a sense of these
children maturing, becoming adults, and show how their maturing sensibilities
might be reflected in the kinds of adventures they experienced in The
Realm.
As such the pages
here contain some strong, though not explicit, imagery.
There are twelve pages
in the Coda, links to move between them all can be found at the bottom
of each page. They're largish images (about 240kb each page) and, depending
on your connection speed, should take a little less than a minute each
to load.
